Take a trip on the wild side with the Armchair Travelers. It is FREE. Program coordinator and videos provided by Ruth Jacobs. Sponsored by Howell-Edwards-Doerksen with Rigdon-Ransom Funeral Directors.
The purpose of this new program is to create community leadership and civic engagement and help to identify and train leaders to use their life skills and assets in new ways. This program will help to develop new leaders who have the capacity to lead, and to engage people age 50 or older in discussion and action. Being informed is the first step--join us.
The Senior Center is now accepting applications from adults age 50 and older who are interested in participating in Senior Leadership School. The fall term runs from September through mid-December and is limited to 15 students. The cost of the 20 hours of instruction is $99 and includes a lecture series, two field trips, two lunches, and a certificate of completion. Scholarships are available to those who qualify. The group will meet twice monthly for two hours and thirty minutes. To receive the certificate of completion, you are asked to complete all eight classes. Call today to register: 503-588-6303.
Curriculum includes:
Gain a better understanding of the function of local government, the leadership of City Council and County Commissioners, and the process for public input. Also included will be a brief discussion of local economics and the role that both the business community and tourism play in the local economy. (2 classes)
Gain a better understanding of the function of state government, governing body and elected leadership, citizen input, budget process, and funding streams. (2 classes)
Each student will be exposed to examples of "grassroots" local groups which are addressing local issues or social causes. A panel representing various organizations will share their cause, history, and details on how their groups were formed and where they stand today. (1 class with field trip to sites; 3 hours with lunch)
Students will be exposed to techniques to being heard in their community. The group will hear from lobbyists, both paid and volunteer. The session will also include how-to tips and techniques to advocate with elected officials as well as personal doctors. Each student will leave this two-part session empowered to express their needs, wants, and opinions both in person and through effective letter-writing or using the power of the local press. The group will also take a field trip to the State Capitol and City Hall to witness first-hand a lobbyist in action. (1 class with a 3-hour field trip and lunch)
After a personal skill inventory process, each student will have the opportunity to be interviewed by agencies seeking volunteers with their specific skills and interests. This session will include a guided process to reaching a skill and interest inventory. Class features a guest speaker addressing the personal and health benefits of volunteering. In addition, there will be a panel of agencies available to share their volunteer needs and benefits. (1 class)
Each graduating class will form a recruiting group. The purpose of the recruiting group is to create community outreach and a speakers forum to spread knowledge and create an informed older adult community. The graduation class will be required to speak at a minimum of two community groups, sharing the Senior Leadership Training Process and what the program has meant to them, and recruit new students to the program. The ultimate goal of this program is to foster older adult volunteerism through education.
Ted Sawyer, pianist, holds two degrees from the Julliard School in New York City. Halloween Treats: The world of classical music is filled with compositions that easily associate with the American festivities of Halloween from the fun of haunted houses and pranks of trick-or-treaters to more somber themes pervasive in classical literature regarding death, the underworld, and truly scary music full of sadness and terror. The highlight of the Halloween Treats concert is the monumental work by Franz Liszt commonly known as the Dante Sonata, a work inspired by the equally monumental work of Alighieri Dante. More of a fantasy than a sonata, this work begins with the terrifying descent into the lower realms of hell and through many stages moves upwards to the blissful realms of paradise. The work is vast in its variety of themese and moods, and ends in an explosion of triumphant joy. It is a dazzling work not only in its display of technical fireworks, but also in its gorgeous melodies of exquisite lyricism.
Class limited to 30-80 people. Cost: $15, refreshments included.
